Having been immersed for several months in the world of Kuwait on the net, I've had to sort out the good, the bad, and the ugly from among the many sites (and sections of sites) on the Internet dedicated to Kuwait. So, forgetting about the bad and the ugly as best I can, what follows is a brief synopsis of the good.
If you're looking for current economic news, Al-Shall provides an excellent Weekly Economic report that is available at http://www.alnadeem.com.bh/shall/. This site is very reliable and is also fairly concise a nice weekly read.
For a more in-depth look at Kuwait, the Library of Congress has a decent page on Kuwait: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/kwtoc.html.
If you read Arabic, it's worthwhile to check out the Kuwaiti newspapers on the web: AlQabas at http://www.moc.kw/alqabas/, and AlWatan at http://www.alwatan.com.kw/.
If you don't read Arabic, until the Arab Times gets on-line, the only English language newspaper available is the Kuwait Times at http://www.paaet.edu.kw/ktimes.
I should note that all of these sites, plus more, are accessible through the Kuwait Information Office website at http://www.kuwait-info.org. The page is still under development, but it is being updated continuously and by the time you read this--as the KIO transfers more and more of its records to the net--the page is sure to become a comprehensive and valuable site for all levels of research.
As for governmental sites, in addition to the State Department Background Notes and CIA world Factbook, a lesser known U.S. government site is the State Department's Country Commercial Guide, the most recent is at http://www.state.gov/www/about_state/business/com_guides/1999/nea/kuwait99.html.
Last but not least are the "mo" pages, or "Ministry of...." The several Kuwaiti ministries that have set up pages have done so with varying degrees of success. Each of these sites has some good information, but each also has its fair share of layout problems and outdated material.
Kuwaiti Ministries:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs http://www.mofa.com/home.htm
Ministry of Information http://www.moinfo.gov.kw
Ministry of Communications http://www.moc.com
Ministry of Finance http://www.mof.gov.kw/
Ministry of Justice http://www.moj.gov.kw
Ministry of Education (Arabic) http://www.moe.edu.kw/
Ministry of Planning http://www.mop.gov.kw
Chris Steinitz works at the Kuwait Information Office in Washington DC, conducting research and helping establish an informative, comprehensive information site for the KIO on the Internet.
