The Critical
Concepts in Islamic Studies Series: Political Islam
Barry Rubin (ed.), Political
Islam (Routledge, 2006). 1200 pages. HB: $450.00. ISBN:
0-415-40453-3. This is a new three-volume collection in the
Routledge Major
Works series, Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies. "Political
Islam" here refers to political movements that argue that
the state must be based on their interpretation of Islamic
Law, viewing this as an alternative to Arab nationalist,
traditional monarchist, or semi-secular democratic states.

American Jewry 1948-1963 (London:
Routlege, 2006). 240 pages. HB: $120.00. ISBN: 9780415372404.
Based on archival material, this intriguing book examines
David Ben-Gurion's influence on the relationship between
the state of Israel, the Zionist Organization,
and American Jewry between 1948 and 1963 when he served as
Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. For further information,

William Hale, Turkey,
the United States and Iraq (Saqi, 2007). 175
pages. PB: £14.99. ISBN: 0 86356 675 8. The American-led
invasion of Iraq in
March 2003 has had an unpredictable impact on the role and
policies of Turkey. One of Iraq's most important neighbors and America's
only formal ally in the region, Turkey provided vital support
to America in the first Gulf War. In the second Gulf War,
America sought
to project itself as the champion of democracy in the Middle
East. Turkey,
as the only Muslim country in the region with an acceptably
democratic form of government, strikingly refused to support
the U.S. strategy. On the one hand, Turkey had
a vital alliance with America,
stretching back to the early days of the cold war, and needed
to sustain it. On the other hand, the Turkish government,
since it was ultimately answerable to its own people, could
not ignore the strong opposition to the invasion of Iraq.
Danny Kaplan, The
Men We Loved: Male Friendship and Nationalism in Israeli
Culture. (New York and Oxford:
Berghahn Books, 2006). 190 pages. PB: $25.00. ISBN: 1-84545-193-7
HB: $80.00. ISBN: 1-84545-192-9. This book explores the interrelations
between male friendship in everyday life and the place of
fraternal friendship in Israeli national sentiments. The
author analyzes selected stories of friendship across the
life course and in unique war experiences, following in-depth
interviewing with Israeli veterans. For further information,

Nikki R. Keddie, Women
in the Middle East: Past and Present.
(Princeton University Press, 2006). 416 pages. PB: $24.95.
ISBN: 978-0-691-12863-4. The book is a concise, comprehensive,
and authoritative history
of the lives of the region's women since the rise of Islam.
The author shows why hostile or apologetic responses are
completely inadequate to the diversity and richness of the
lives of Middle Eastern women, and she provides a unique
overview of their past and rapidly changing present. For

P.
R. Kumaraswamy, Historical Dictionary of the Arab-Israeli
Conflict (The Scarecrow Press, Inc., October 2006).
424 pages. HB: $99.00. ISBN: 0810853434. The dictionary provides
factual background through a list of acronyms and abbreviations,
an introductory essay, a chronology, a bibliography, and
hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the more
significant persons, places, and events, including the various
wars and negotiations. The history, religion, culture, and
archeology that this rivalry has sparked between the Arabs
and Israelis over the same piece of territory is traced in
this book, which offers the essential details using neutral
terms and thereby allowing readers to draw conclusions for
themselves. For further information, click

Emily Landau, Arms

Ian S. Lustick, Trapped in the War on Terror (University
of Pennsylvania Press, 2006). 200
pages. PB: $24.95. ISBN 0-8122-3983-0. The book questions the
very rationale for the War on Terror. By analyzing the virtual
absence of evidence of a terrorist threat inside the United
States along with the motives and strategic purposes of al-Qa'ida,
Lustick shows how disconnected the War on Terror is from the
real but remote threat terrorism poses. For further information,

David M. Malone,
Ben Rowswell, and Markus E. Bouillon, Iraq: Preventing
a New Generation of Conflict (Rienner, 2007). 350 pages.
PB: $24.50 ISBN: 1-58826-504-8. HB: $59.95. ISBN: 1-58826-528-5.
The authors grapple with the requirements for a successful
peace building enterprise in Iraq, grounding their conclusions
in a nuanced analysis of the sources of the country's internal
conflicts. For more information, click

Amos Nadan, The Palestinian
Peasant Economy under the Mandate: A Story of Colonial Bungling (Harvard
University Press, 2006). 256 pages. PB: $19.95. ISBN: 0-674-02135-5.
Challenging the claim that Palestine's
peasant economy progressed during the 1920s and 1930s, Amos
Nadan skillfully integrates a wide variety of sources to
demonstrate that the period was actually one of deterioration
on both the macro (per capita) and micro levels. The economy
would have most likely continued its downward spiral during
the 1940s had it not been for the temporary prosperity that
resulted from World War II. For further information, visit: http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog/NADPAX.html.
David Rodman, Arms
Transfers to Israel: The Strategic Logic Behind American
Military Assistance (Sussex Academic
Press, 2007).156 pages. HB: $45.00. ISBN: 1 84519 178. This
book dispels two common myths about the American-Israeli
patron-client relationship, that arms transfers to Israel
have been motivated by American domestic politics rather
than national interests and that these arms transfers have
come without any political strings attached to them. For

9781845191429. Provides an authoritative and indispensable
guide to strategic developments and military capabilities in
the Middle East. It offers a comprehensive insightful assessment
of the complex Middle East strategic environment, focusing
on the
international, regional, and Israeli domestic arenas, and it

of the countries in the Middle East. For further information,
