"Israel's New Strategy" in Foreign Affairs
Barry Rubin, "Israel's New Strategy," Foreign Affairs (July-August 2006). Israeli politics has undergone a transformation, driven by the recognition that holding the West Bank and Gaza is not in Israel's interest and that the Palestinian leadership is not ready for peace. "Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone," Center for International Studies and Diplomacy SOAS. The creation of a WMD Free Zone in the Middle East has been a long-stated objective of both the international community and also of countries in the region. The need for such a zone is greater today than at any other time in recent history, as it would do much to diffuse tensions that have made the Middle East the crucible that is today. However, making this a reality is a challenging and sensitive task requiring sustained efforts in order to lay the political and technical foundations that would make its negotiation possible. To this end and to complement efforts already underway in the region, this project was initiated in November 2006. For full text and materials of the conference, click here.

Lawrence Wright, "My Trip to Al-Qaeda." New Yorker staff writer, Wright, has opened a one-man show at the Culture Project in New York City both written and performed by him. The play is a first-person account of his experiences, and it examines (among other themes) the tension between his roles as journalist and citizen. In the course of his work on the roots and the rise of Islamist terrorism, Wright has conducted more than 600 interviews and traveled to Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and much of Western Europe.
