Barry Rubin and Judith Colp Rubin, Hating America: A History (Oxford University Press, 2004.)  This work traces the paradox that is America, a country that is both the most reviled and most envied land on earth. In the end, the authors demonstrate how anti-Americanism has often been a visceral response to the very idea--as well as both the ideals and policies--of America itself, its aggressive innovation, its self-confidence, and the challenge it poses to alternative ideologies. ISBN: 0195167732  HB  $29.95.  To order: <http://www.oup.com/us/?view=usa>.  Calls in the US:  800-451-7556 or Fax your order:  919-677-1303.

Barry Rubin, Tragedy of the Middle East (Cambridge University Press, 2004). Now available in Paperback.  This book examines what may be the world's most crisis-ridden region and suggests that its problems arises from regimes strong enough and able to use certain "trump issues" to block reform. Only in the Middle East have rulers found ways to win ongoing mass support for dictatorships that do not provide peace, prosperity or freedom. These key leading groups reject necessary compromises and cause the region to remain in its old patterns of conflict and stasis. To Order:  296 pages, ISBN: 0521603870 Price: $21.99 call the publisher's customer service at 1-800-872-7423, or visit <http://us.cambridge.org/titles/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521603870>.

Barry Rubin and Judith Colp Rubin, Anti-American Terrorism and the Middle East (Oxford University Press, 2004).  Now available in Paperback.  There is a growing verbal and armed offensive against the United States and its citizens, and this book examines these forces through the words of leaders and ideologues and the attacks they have perpetrated.  Anti-Americanism and the doctrines of Middle East revolutionary movements are described in the words of their leaders, as well as a wide range of responses to these events, showing the range of factors cited for hating America. Finally, the U.S. government reaction to the attacks is provided in detail, including a flurry of executive and congressional orders to fight anti-American terrorism. Only primary sources are used, many of them in translation or appearing in print for the first time.
