4. FUNDING/SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS/WRITING OPPORTUNITIES

     American University Center for Global Peace announces two "Mustafa Barzani Graduate Peace Fellowships" honoring the memory of Mula Mustafa Barzani, leader in the struggle for Kurdish rights and identity. This renewable fellowship provides tuition for graduate study in any field at American University.      The Dept. of the Middle East and Far East Studies and the Dept. of Arab Philology of the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland are calling for papers for "Perspectives on Modern Oman" in the areas of modern history, politics, economy, and social and cultural studies.  The papers should be of high academic value, based on author's own research and not published previously.  For information: <andpikul@poczta.onet.pl>.

     Turkish Studies Association announces its 2004 Prize Competitions:

5. RESEARCH QUERIES-PLEASE HELP 

Kenneth Cuno from the University of Illinois is looking to put together a panel for MESA 04 on "The Family and Law," and needs three or four good papers plus a commentator to join him.  Papers can be from any appropriate discipline and from any period if they are historical studies.      David Albright and Corey Hinderstein, "The Centrifuge Connection," The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists March/April issue. This article provides detailed information on Iran's gas centrifuge uranium enrichment procurements, about which more information is being discovered every day. This information raises concerns about Iran's declarations to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the authors propose that Iran needs to do more to answer outstanding questions from the IAEA. <http://www.thebulletin.org/issues/2004/ma04/ma04albright.html>

     Nikki Keddie, Modern Iran: Roots and Results of Revolution, New Haven, Yale University Press, 2003. ($18.50, but available for $12.95 at Amazon.com).  In this substantially revised and expanded version of Nikki Keddie's classic Roots of Revolution, the author brings the story of modern Iran to the present, exploring the political, cultural, and social changes of the past quarter-century.      Roskin, Michael G. and James J. Coyle, Politics of the Middle East: Cultures and Conflicts (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004).  This new college textbook covers events from the dawn of time to the Second Gulf War and the defeat of Saddam Husayn.  Unique to college textbooks, it has extensive sections on the Northern Tier, including a separate chapter on Kurdish nationalism.  Written in easily understood language with numerous information boxes, it is designed for use in introductory Middle East classes.  The book can be ordered at <http://amazon.com>.
