     The Middle East Center at the University of Utah is calling for papers for its conference on the Middle East and Central Asia to be held October 17-18, 2003, at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA. Topics will encompass interdisciplinary social science approaches to contemporary issues and future prospects in the Middle East and Central Asia. Selected papers will be published in an edited volume. In addition to topic-specific sessions, the conference will include complementary Middle Eastern dinner, performance by Central Asian dance ensemble, and screening of Middle Eastern and Central Asian films.      The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Institute of Asian and African Studies, The Max Schloessinger Memorial Foundation is seeking an Editor\Director of Publications for Jerusalem Studies in Arabic and Islam Journal (JSAI) at the Institute of Asian and African Studies (approximately 20 hours a week). Requirements: Native English speaker\ English at native speaker level, Academic degree, Ability and willingness to learn LaTeX (publishing program), Arabic and a background in Islamic Studies will be considered advantages.      Insaniyaat (Humanities), a graduate student-run on-line periodical (based at the American University in Cairo, Sociology and Anthropology Department), seeks submissions for its Fall 2003 issue. The issue will focus on “Gender in the Middle East.” Contributions may deal with gendered local vs. universal legal discourses; the prevalent cultural constructions of sexuality/gender in Middle Eastern media; the construction of gendered identities by modern education. Other topics may include globalization and the changing gender roles in the Middle East, women's health, social pressures on women, social activism and women, privatization and changing roles of women.      J. Millard Burr and Robert O. Collins, Revolutionary Sudan Hasan al-Turabi and the Islamist State, 1989-2000 (Brill, 2003). This book investigates the objectives, activities, and a decade of success and failure of Islamist military officers and civilians after the coup d'etat by Brigadier Omar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir. It describes and analyzes the role played by Hasan al-Turabi in the Sudan, the world, and the revolutionary government from its relative isolation on the frontiers of Islam and the margins of the Arab World. The authors follow the activities of this ideological and activist leader of the revolution who used his influence as a charismatic Muslim scholar to precipitate an Islamic revolution until his downfall and expulsion from government in 2000 by those whom he had hoped to mold to his Islamist ideologies.
