IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

September 16-18, the GLORIA Center hosted an international conference on anti-Americanism.  Papers presented were as follows: Fiamma Nirenstein: anti-Americanism and Italy; Judith Colp Rubin: 19th  Century European anti-Americanism, Themes and  Perceptions; Bret Stephens:  European anti-Americanism: Clarity, Conceit, Illusion; Reuven Paz: Islamists and anti-Americanism; Hillel Frisch: Palestinians and anti-Americanism; Guy Bechor: Egypt and anti-Americanism; Adel Darwish: Arab Media and anti-Americanism; Patrick Clawson: Iran and anti-Americanism; Amatzia Baram: Iraq and anti-Americanism; Josh Pollack: Saudi Arabia and anti-Americanism; Cameron Brown: September 11 and Reactions to it; Yossi Klein Halevi: anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism; Barry Rubin: Anti-Americanism as a Tool of Dictatorial Control; Stefani Hoffman: USSR and Russia and anti-Americanism; Mark Falcoff: Latin America and anti-Americanism; Bernard Avishai: anti-Americanism and the American Intellectual Elite; Abdel Mahdi Abdallah: Attitudes of Anti-Americanism in the Arab World, a Socio-Political Perspective; and Robert Lieber: anti-Americanism: Why Do They Hate Us and Why Do They Love Us?      Selected papers on anti-Americanism and the Middle East will appear in December 2003 issue of MERIA Journal and the collection will be published as a book.  This conference was generously supported by the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.        IN RESPONSE to Nimrod Raphaeli's article in the September 2003 MERIA Journal, "Saudi Arabia: A Brief Guide to its Politics and Problems," Mr. St. John Armitage wrote saying there were a number of errors concerning names. Here is his list of alleged errors and the author's response.      1. Modern Saudi Arabia was founded by King Abd al-Aziz bin Sa'ud.      The author responds:   The proper full name of the founder of Saudi Arabia is Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Rahman al-Faisal al-Sa'ud. Al-Sa'ud has commonly been accepted as the family name of the king and his successors, and hence Saudi Arabia. In most books he is referred to as ibn saud or bin Sa'ud ((bin or ibn means the same--the son of). See for example, Fouad Ajami, "The Dream Palace of the Arabs" (Pantheon, 1998), p.178, and Bernard Lewis, "The Middle East," (Phonix, 1996), p.344 "head of the house, 'Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud," and p. 350 "Ibn Saud of Arabia."      2. Abd al-Rahmam bin Abd al-Aziz. Deputy Minister of Defense.      Response: Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Aziz is the deputy minister of defense. This is not an error.      3. Ahmad bin Abd al-Aziz. Deputy [ERROR] Minister of Interior.      The author responds: Ahmad bin Abd al-Aziz is the deputy minister of interior.      4. Turki [ERROR] and Badr, serve as the deputies to the commander of The National Guard.      Response: Turki and Badr do serve as deputies to the commander of the National Guard. This is not an error.      5. Three of Abdallah's sons, Mut'ib, Turki [ERROR] and Abd al-Aziz[ERROR] serve in various senior capacities in the National Guard                    Response: Abdallah's three sons, Mut'ib, Turki and Abd al-Aziz do serve in high positions in the National Guard.      6. The minister of foreign affairs, Prince Faisal, [ERROR] is the son of the late King Sa'ud.      Response: The minister of foreign affairs Prince Saud al-Faisal is the son of King Faisal as his name indicates and as he appears in the chart. It was an error to say that he was the son of King Saud. I regret the error but the fact remains that he is the son of a king and the nephew of the reigning king.      7. The ambassador to the United Kingdom, Prince Turki, is the son of the late King Faisal, and thus the first cousin of the minister.[WHICH MINISTER - NOT THE FOREIGN MINISTER]      Author's response: Saud al-Faisal is the minister of foreign affairs as he was listed in the chart. Unfortunately, it was my error to suggest he was the son of Sa'ud. He is the son of Faisal and hence the brother, not the cousin, of another Turki, Turki al-Faisal, the Saudi Ambassador to the United Kingdom.      8. Two other princes occupy the two most senior civil service posts in the ministry,[WHICH MINISTRY?] including that of the first secretary-general and the director general of inspection,  Abd al-Rahman (Sultan's brother) who serves as deputy [ERROR] minister.  A [WHICH?]  minister's son, Khaled, serves as assistant minister              Response: The text indicates the reference was still to the ministry of foreign affairs.       9. A half-brother of King Fahd, Prince Mut'ib, serves as a minister for public works and housing, while his brother, Prince Ahmad,[ERROR]                   Response: Ahmad bin Abd al-Aziz is the deputy minister of interior.                10. Prince Abdallah bin Faisal is the governor of the investment Authority with the rank of minister. He is the son of the late King Faisal [ERROR]                   Response: The above statement is in fact correct.      11.  All the governors report to the minister of interior, Prince Na'if. The governors are either brothers of the minister of interior or his nephews.[ERROR]      Response: I should say "most" rather than all of the governors are brothers and nephews of Prince Na'if. The others are family members. This is really a semantic point. All the governors are princes.      12. The other half-brothers of the minister of interior are the governors Of al-Baha [ERROR],      Response: My statement is in fact correct.      13. Prince Mash'al bin Majid bin Abdul al-Aziz.(and the son of Prince Majid, the governor of Meccah) [ERROR - NOT EVEN FORMER GOVERNOR]      Response: The statement is in fact correct.      14. The sole exception [ERROR] is Princess Abta bin Hamoud al-Rashid, president of the Women's Council, who is the wife of Prince Muqrin, the governor of Mecca.      Author's response: I refer to the sole princess whose name appeared in the papers as occupying an official position. The names of other princesses often appear in connection with individual charitable work.        The above criticisms are almost all inaccurate except for the one raised in point six which also affects point seven. The main picture that emerges from the articles is that Saudi Arabia is an oligarchy run by princes who occupy every senior position in the land. The other point that was made was that despite the wealth of the country the vast majority of the Saudis are in worse shape today than they were 10 or 20 years ago and the situation is not improving.        One manifestation of this extended family is the inter-family marriages. Sa'ud al-Faisal is the minister of foreign affairs, his brother Turki is the ambassador to the United Kingdom and his cousin Bandar is the ambassador to the United States who is married to Haifa Al-Faisal the sister of the minister and the daughter of the later King Faisal.

Tarek Heggy, Culture, Civilization and Humanity (Frank Cass, October 2003). 391 pp. (paper). $26.00. ISBN:  0-7146-8434-1. Tarek Heggy is considered one of the prime advocates in the Arab world of the values of modernity, progress, democracy, civil society, cultural tolerance and humanity. Between 1978 and 2001, he published 12 successful books in Arabic and Culture, Civilization and Humanity is the result of his efforts to bring his work to the English-speaking world for the first time. The author argues that it can transcend any clash of civilizations and cultures. He suggests that “dialogue is possible if the vision exists and serious efforts are made to transform it into a reality.” However, understanding does not come at the expense of standardizing world cultures, rather the author promotes and emphasizes “unity through diversity” and “expanding a culture of respecting otherness”. He discusses the central importance of progress and debates the characteristics that can bring development to Egypt and the Middle East. Portland: Frank Cass, 2003). 262 pp. 17.50 pounds (paper).ISBN 0-7146-8280-2.

The idea for this collection is to go beyond the media presentation of the impact of a politicized notion of Islam in the region and to consider the reality that lies behind current issues in the region and the role that an embedded Islam has played or may play. The focus is a sort of stocktaking of the state of our understanding of the phenomena of the Islamic Revival, the development of Islamic politics or Islamism and attempts of some Islamic intellectuals to construct models for the modernization of Islamic society without resorting to westernization models.
