IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

MERIA is happy to announce the start of its sixth year of publication. As you probably have seen, MERIA is now a project of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center. To learn about this Center and our projects, visit <http://gloria.idc.ac.il>

We invite you to submit articles for MERIA Journal, Vol. 6, No.1 (March 2002), the world's largest e-journal on the Middle East. Please send queries and manuscripts to Barry Rubin at <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>.

MERIA has now published a second book online. Barry Rubin, Modern Dictators: Third World Coupmakers, Strongmen, and Populist Tyrants. It is a comparative, cross-regional survey of dictatorships in the Third World. The Middle East section focuses on Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The book was originally published by McGraw-Hill with a British edition by WH Allen and the paperback from New American Library/Meridian. The book is produced in adobe/pdf, identical with the printed version. See or download the book through: <http://www.biu.ac.il/SOC/besa/meria/br/books/dictators.pdf>.

We are pleased to note that the first book put online, Cauldron of Turmoil, a history and analysis of the modern Persian Gulf region, has been distributed (downloaded) to 6,500 readers in the first nine months online!

MERIA Journal Vol. 5, No. 4 included a package of articles relating to the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. It included items on U.S. policy, Usama bin-Ladin’s ideology, the debate within Islam, Middle East reactions to the attacks, the question of sanctions on Iraq, and as historical background a chronology on Americans or U.S. facilities struck in previous terror attacks. For the complete package of articles see our site.

An updated version of our "Bibliography on Turkish-Israel Relations" is at
