IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Israel-Arab Reader, edited by Walter Laqueur and Barry Rubin, has been widely used for courses and as a reference book on this issue. Almost 50,000 copies are in print. The new, revised and completely updated sixth edition will be published by Penguin Putnam on August 7, 2001. This paperback covers the Arab-Israel conflict and peace process from its inception to the present day. It is 560 pages long and costs $17.00. ISBN 0140297138. Now available: The first MERIAbook in print. The first of three published books from the MERIA project. Barry Rubin and Kemal Kirisci (editors), Turkey in World Politics: An Emerging Multi-Regional Power, by Lynn Rienner publishers. A Turkish-language edition and an English-language paperback will soon be published in Turkey by Bosphorus University Press. Later this year, Frank Cass will publish Barry Rubin (editor), The Region at the Center of the World: Crises and Quandaries in the Contemporary Persian Gulf, (Frank Cass, 2001). Next year, SUNY Press will publish Barry Rubin (editor) Contemporary Islamist Movements in the Middle East.  These books will be available to MERIA readers at a 20 percent discount. 1. PUBLICATIONS OF INTEREST

A. Central Asia/Central Eurasia resources.

1) The International Crisis Group's Central Asia Project produces a series of reports related to potential conflict in Central Asia, with a special focus on risk-reducing actions.  They are available at <http://www.crisisweb.org/>. One was just published on growing Islamism and another will soon appear on local economic crises and social unrest. 2) The Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) is a new, rapidly growing scholarly association aimed at fostering communication and high standards of scholarship in the social sciences and humanities focused on Central Eurasia. CESS holds an Annual Conference (you can still your abstract for the next CESS conference, 11-14 Oct. 2001 in Madison, Wisconsin, contact: Uli Schamiloglu <uschamil@facstaff.wisc.edu>) and has just issued a Call for Contributions for its new publication, the Central Eurasian Studies Review (contact: Virginia Martin: <martinvi@email.uah.edu>). 3) The CentralAsia-L Announcement List for Central Asia Studies distributes information about conferences, publications, jobs, grant opportunities, programs and other resources and opportunities in Central Asian studies. The Cultural Orientation Project: The United States Refugee Program helps refugees resettle in the United States, most refugees receive cultural orientation (CO) training. Menachem Begin Legacy Center Prizes for research and seminar papers invites graduate students and faculty to submit papers regarding: Menachem Begin's life activities, legacy, Zionist struggle to establish the State of Israel, Irgun Tzvai L'eumi, Israel: a democratic Jewish State, Begin's Zionist teachings, 1978 Camp David Process, Social Justice, Ethics of Government. Call for applications for The UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) Visiting Research Fellowships - the Middle East - program. In 2002, the fellowships are reserved for researchers from the Middle East and the program will focus on the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The fellowship program will begin January 2002. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend for their time in Geneva that will cover their living expenses. A return fare from the fellows' places of residence will also be paid.
