IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Growth of MERIA: We are pleased to announce more growth for MERIA. In May 2001 alone, we had 41,669 hits, compared to 20,500 in May 2000, and only 4,600 in May 1999. On the site alone, 5,329 people looked at the Vol. 4 No. 4 Journal (Dec. 2000) from December through May, in addition to the 8,000 people who received it directly. Giving this  issue a readership of over 13,000. In addition, we estimate that 2,000 people received it forwarded from other lists and individuals. Additional people will read the issue in later months. Over 3,600 adobe/.pdf MERIA Journal articles (laid out in journal format) are downloaded each  month. To date, 2,500 people have downloaded the entire text of Barry Rubin's book, Cauldron of Turmoil on the politics of the Persian Gulf.

Now published: The first MERIAbook in print. The first of three published books from the MERIA project is now available. Barry Rubin  and Kemal Kirisci (editors), Turkey in World Politics: An Emerging Multi-Regional Power, by Lynn Rienner publishers. A Turkish-language edition and an English-language paperback will soon be published in Turkey by Bosphorus University Press. In the coming months, two more books will appear: Barry Rubin (editor), The Region at the Center of  the World: Crises and Quandries in the Contemporary Persian Gulf, (Frank Cass, 2001) and Barry Rubin (editor) Contemporary Islamist Movements in the Middle East (SUNY Press, 2002).

These books will be available to MERIA readers at a discount. In addition, we welcome suggestions for future books. Below is a notice on the Lynn Rienner book. We welcome suggestions for publicizing this volume.

MERIA has updated its link list--fixing broken links and adding many new links to think tanks, news sources, government bodies, and more. The link list has also been modified for faster downloading. As with previous versions, it is intended as a selective--not an all-inclusive--guide, including only the most useful or interesting sites. Through the links of those sites listed, however, an enormous number of additional sites can be reached. The sites chosen have significant Middle East content and orientation, and those with  material in English were given preference, as well are sites which are  frequently updated. A longer explanation of our criteria can be found on the link list itself <http://www.biu.ac.il/SOC/besa/meria/links.html>. If you have suggestions for any further additions to our list, please e-mail them to <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>. *********************************************************************** Turkey in World Politics: An Emerging Multi-Regional Power, edited by Barry Rubin and Kemal Kirisci. Few states play a part in more regions and issues than does  Turkey.

During the 1990s, Turkey transformed its foreign policy and self-image more thoroughly than any non-Communist country in the post-Cold War era. Turkey interacts with regions as different as  Western Europe and Central Asia, the Balkans, and the Middle East. It also participates in shaping diverse issues, ranging from humanitarian assistance to political stability, conflict resolution, strategic rivalries, and economic competition in all these places. Especially compared to the Cold War years, Turkey is playing a far more active  role in shaping foreign events and international politics.

Given the new, increasingly important role of Turkey in the world, a reassessment of Turkey's foreign policy and international role is needed. This book provides a detailed inventory and analysis of  Ankara's diplomacy. In addition, it presents several themes for Turkish foreign policy that run across the different geographical fronts it faces.
