6. SCHOLAR'S AND AUTHOR'S ALERTS (writers report on their books, articles, and activities)

Alexander Bligh, The Political Legacy of King Hussein (Sussex Academic Press, September 2001), 272 pages (Hardcover) 49.50 pounds/$75. ISBN 1-902210-72-7. This book focuses on Hussein's deep concern for the future of the monarchy, together with his convictions, as they affected his strategic decisions and their contribution to the formation of present-day Jordan. <http://www.sussex-academic.co.uk/>.

Alan Dowty, The Jewish State: A Century Later (updated with a new preface) (University of California Press, 2001). $18.95 (paperback). ISBN 0-520-22911-8. Dowty elucidates the broad cluster of cultural, historical, and ideological tenets which came to comprise Israel's contemporary political system. He demonstrates that such tenets were not arbitrary but in fact developed logically from Jewish political habits and circumstances of time. He also proposes answers to puzzles regarding the strengths and weaknesses of Israeli democracy in responding to challenges of communal division, religious contention, the country's non-Jewish minority, and accommodation with the Palestinians. <http://www.ucpress.edu/>.

Michael Rubin, Into The Shadows: Radical Vigilantes In Khatami's Iran (Washington: The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, 2001) $19.95; xviii +123 pp. ISBN 0-944029-45-0. While many scholars discuss Iran's various governmental power centers, no analysis is complete without examining Iran's hardline vigilantes. This book combines a history of the vigilante phenomenon in twentieth century Iran, with a special focus on how groups like Ansar-i Hizbullah, Fida'iyan-i Islam, and the Sa'id Imami gang impact Iranian politics today.
