New book: The Israel-Arab Reader, sixth edition. Edited by Walter Laqueur and Barry Rubin (NY: Penguin Putnam, 2001).

The new, revised and completely updated sixth edition of the Israel-Arab Reader has been published by Penguin Putnam. This paperback covers the Arab-Israel conflict and peace process from its inception a century ago to the present day, including material on the 2000 Camp David summit, Clinton plan, and the new intifada. Almost 50,000 copies of previous editions are in print, making this one of the most widely used reference books on the Middle East.

Beginning with the inception of the Zionist and Arab nationalist movements, the book covers more than a century of history. It documents the British mandate and attempts to resolve the conflict; Israel's independence and the outbreak of wars; international diplomatic efforts to solve the conflict; and the peace process and its breakdown. Materials are presented reflecting the positions of Arab leaders and states, Europeans, Israel, Palestinians, the USSR, and the United States. The texts of international resolutions and agreements, as well as the accords made during the peace process, are also provided. In all, there are about 250 entries, all primary source material from a wide range of sources.

The result is a comprehensive work suitable for reading, reference, and teaching. The past edition has been reviewed and re-edited for timeliness and balance. Many new items have been added to bring the coverage up to date. We hope you will find the book of interest for purchasing, reading, or recommending your library's purchase.

Few states play a part in more regions and issues than does Turkey. During the 1990s, Turkey transformed its foreign policy and self-image more thoroughly than any non-Communist country in the post-Cold War era. Turkey interacts with regions as different as Western Europe and Central Asia, the Balkans, and the Middle East. It also participates in shaping diverse issues, ranging from humanitarian assistance to political stability, conflict resolution, strategic rivalries, and economic competition in all these places. Especially compared to the Cold War years, Turkey is playing a far more active role in shaping foreign events and international politics.

Given the new, increasingly important role of Turkey in the world, a reassessment of Turkey's foreign policy and international role is needed. This book provides a detailed inventory and analysis of Ankara's diplomacy. In addition, it presents several themes for Turkish foreign policy that run across the different geographical fronts it faces.

1. PUBLICATIONS OF INTEREST

A. Books

Efraim Inbar, The Israeli-Turkish Entente (King's College London Mediterranean Studies, 2001). 7 pounds. The book is the first comprehensive study that explains this entente’s timing, substance, and impact on the regional environment. The book argues that the entente with Israel was part of a reorientation of Turkey's foreign policy as a result of the emergence of a new international constellation following the demise of the Soviet Union. The partnership is useful in dealing with a variety of common challenges, such as the adversary relationship with Syria; security risks emanating from Iraq and Iran (particularly concerning weapons of mass destruction); Islamist extremism; and the future of Central Asia. Turkey and Israel share a problematic relationship with Europe and suspicions of a resurgent Russia. This alignment strengthens the peace process between Israel and its neighbors, which is predicated upon a strong Israel; deters radical states, such as Iran, Iraq and Syria; and enhances U.S. influence in the region.
