MERIA JOURNAL: NOW IN PRINTED JOURNAL FORMAT (Adobe Acrobat)

MERIA Journal now offers a new free service allowing you to print out an entire issue or individual articles in a format precisely the same as any regular print journal. This new service will put Journal articles in PDF format, which can be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader. We are finalizing our design and this option will be on-line by June 1, 2000.

Most people already have Adobe Acrobat Readers on their computers. If you don't, you can obtain the software for free by clicking on this icon  , which will take you to Adobe's download site. The download is simple and fast.

No matter what e-mail program, operating system, or word-processing software you use, you can download and/or print the journal in our formatted design. This allows for easier reading as well as convenient library, institutional, or classroom use.

For those who presently receive MERIA Journal as a plain text e-mail (a free service), and would like to get it as an Adobe attachment instead, simply e-mail us at besa@mail.biu.ac.il, with a one-line message stating your name, e-mail address (if different than the sending address), and your wish to receive MERIA in Adobe format. The Journal will also be available in Adobe format here on our web site, eventually including all previous editions as well.

ANNOUNCING MERIA JOURNAL, VOL. 4, NO. 2 (JUNE 2000)
We are pleased to announce the next issue of MERIA Journal, Vol. 4, No. 2 (June 2000). Note that this issue will be available in Adobe format for those who request it or download it from our homepage. As always, each article will be sent individually directly to subscribers during the first two weeks of June.

Dr. Jonathan Rynhold provides an original analysis of U.S.-Israel relations from the perspective of Israeli policymaking. We also present an annotated document, the congressional testimony of CIA director George Tenet. The Tenet presentation illustrates a major new factor in U.S. Middle East policy, regarding a high priority on the perceived threat from weapons of mass destruction.

Yosef Ben Aharon, Israel's former negotiator with Syria, gives a compelling first-hand account of his talks with the Syrians, including an evaluation of the more recent failed talks. We also provide an original translation with a detailed analysis by Prof. Barry Rubin, of Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Sharaa's speech to the Arab Writers' Union. Prof. Rubin argues this talk provides a unique insight into the changes and constraints of Syrian foreign policy.

Dr. Robert Freedman has a detailed analysis on Russian-Iranian relations in the 1990s. Dr. Reuven Paz discusses a neglected issue, how Palestinian Islamic groups have functioned within and tried to use higher education institutions. Dr. Michael Laskier has written the first comprehensive account on the history of Israel's relations with the North African states.

You are invited to send proposals, questions, or articles to be considered for the September 2000 issue to: <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>.

5. RESEARCH QUERIES-PLEASE HELP

Eviathar H. Ben-Zedeff's <evi@research.haifa.ac.il> answer to Mira Sucharov's query about the approximate year in which the burnt-out shell of the Altalena finally sank to the sea-bottom off the coast of Tel Aviv: According to Shlomo Nakdimon's "Altalena" [in Hebrew], the sinking operation began on early July 1949 and lasted about four months. The shell was taken to about 8 miles off the Nebi Rubin [now Palmachim] beach south of Tel Aviv (pp. 464-7).

Eviathar H. Ben-Zedeff's <evi@research.haifa.ac.il> answer to Jacob Larsson's query on the battle of Abu Agheila, 1967: Ganz's article in "Armor" 83, pp. 15-21 (1974), compares 1956 and 1967 battles. Another source is the US Army's research of that battle (known as Umm Katef) done by the center for military history, or USMA. Plenty of research material and data were published in Hebrew, including by Gen. Mordechay Zippory's. Look at Gen Sharon's account in his biography, "Warrior."

Mira Sucharov's <sucharom@gusun.georgetown.edu> answer to Jacob Larsson's query on the Six Day War: See the IDF's "commemorative album" of the war- Col. Mordechai Bar-On, ed., "Israel Defence Forces: The Six Day War" (Tel Aviv: Israel Ministry of Defense, 1968).

Mira Sucharov's <sucharom@gusun.georgetown.edu> answer to Philipus YA Perdana's query about Israeli newspaper clippings: The Jerusalem Post sells a CD of all their articles from 1990-97.
