IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW PRINT JOURNAL: THE JOURNAL OF TURKISH POLITICS AND FOREIGN POLICY

We are pleased to announce the creation of a new journal, THE JOURNAL OF TURKISH POLITICS AND FOREIGN POLICY, to be published by Frank Cass publishers. The first issue will appear in the spring of the year 2000.

As the title implies, the journal will cover issues regarding politics and foreign policy during the era of the Turkish republic. Relevant articles in the fields of political science, international relations, history, economics and others will be considered.

The journal will be edited by Barry Rubin. Associate editors will include:

Prof. Bulent Aras: Reviews and documentation

Prof. Gamze Avce: Turkish-European relations

Prof. Ali Carkoglu: Elections, voting behavior, political parties, quantitative methodology.

Prof. Bilge Criss: Modern Turkish history

Prof. Kemal Kirisci: Turkish foreign policy toward the Middle East and the United States.

Prof. Sule Kut: Turkish-Balkans policy

We are assembling an Editorial Board and a number of distinguished scholars have already accepted.

Currently, we project the following as the first two issues:

Vol. 1 No. 1: Deadline, November 1999, publication March 2000): The New Turkish Foreign Policy in the Post-Cold War Era

Vol. 1 No. 2: Deadline, May 1999, publication September 1999: A Survey on the Current State of Studies About Turkish Politics and Foreign Policy.

All issues will also include book reviews, documentation, and reviews of recent periodical literature.

We will seek listing in the International Political Science Abstracts, Social Science Index, the Public Affairs Information Service, and other relevant indices.

We welcome the following:

--People interested in participating in a direct way.

--Those interested in submitting articles or being reviewers.

--Suggestions and ideas for theme issues, articles, authors, features, and activities.

--Expressions of interest in being subscribers and suggestions of others whom we should contact.

We believe this will be a successful enterprise and urge all interested to cooperate in making this a useful, original, and exciting venture.

If you are potentially interested in a subscription or in participating, please write: <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>.

NEW FEATURE: MERIA RESEARCH GUIDE

MERIA is launching a new feature which we think would be of great use to our readers: the MERIA Research Guide. The concept is simple. We are asking experts on different countries and issues to write brief (200-400) word essays on the sites they find most valuable for researching a specific topic. We will be publishing these in MERIA News and putting them on our homepage. We also hope to send you the full list once a year. If you wish to volunteer for a specific topic, write <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>

MERIA BOOKS IN PRINT

We are still looking for chapters for projected MERIA books in print:

Current Issues in the Gulf (especially chapters on Iraq and Iran)

Contemporary Islamic Political Movements

If you have an idea to propose or a text to send, write: <besa@mail.biu.ac.il>.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: TURKISH-ISRAEL RELATIONS

We've had so many requests for information on this issue that we decided to compile a bibliography on the subject. We hope it's useful and invite additional entries.
