IMPORTANT NEWS:
Our new project, Specialized Lists
MERIA is starting a new type of project beginning in May 1999 open for free subscriptions to anyone wishing to join:
1. The Turkish Politics and Foreign Policy List. This project builds on our successful seminar, but now the list will be open to everyone. Subscribers will receive a variety of articles concerning contemporary developments in Turkey and Central Asia. They will also be able to send in announcements of conferences, books, or articles; information on jobs; research queries; discussion of current issues; etc. The list will be edited by Dr. Bulent Aras at Fatih University and will be governed by an editorial board. Materials will be accepted in Turkish or English. To subscribe or for more information, write: <besa@ashur.cc.biu.ac.il>. Details on sending items will be announced to list subscribers.
2. The Israel Studies list. Subscribers will be able to discuss issues in all areas and send in information regarding academic and policy studies on modern Israel, including history, political science, culture, anthropology, sociology, etc. We also plan to have an archive which will be useful for researchers. Polemics, partisan political statements, insulting or inciteful materials, and other items not of a scholarly quality will be omitted by the editorial board. This is also not a forum for debating the peace process or the Arab-Israeli conflict as such.
Among the items which will be included are: announcements of meetings or conferences, calls for papers, new publications, book and other reviews, announcements of relevant websites, jobs, scholarship or fellowship opportunities, discussion of issues, articles or papers, queries, exchanges on relevant issues at a proper level of discussion. The list will be moderated by an editorial board, now in formation. To subscribe or for more information, write: <besa@ashur.cc.biu.ac.il>. Details on sending items will be announced to list subscribers.
We are interested in starting other specialized lists, especially if there are people willing to serve as editors or to participate in managing them. write us with suggestions.
Improvements in MERIA News: MERIA News Author's Alerts is changing to Scholar's Alerts. In addition to carrying news about your writings, Middle East scholars can also report changes in their professional status, such as new appointments, dissertations, visiting appointments, etc. You are invited to send us information on these matters.
MERIABOOKS: A new book on U.S. foreign policy has been produced and articles added to other books. All is available for free through email. See the complete list at the end of this MERIA News.
Correction: Alan Dowty corrects a paragraph, damaged in transmission, for his article on Israeli policy in MERIA Journal Vol. 1 No. 3. The passage in question should read:
The capacity to extract gloomy premonitions from even the most promising turn of events remains undiminished.
In his inaugural address to the Knesset on July 13, 1992, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin identified this sense of insecurity as a major obstacle:
"It is our duty, to ourselves and our children, to see the new world as it is now-to discern its dangers, explore its prospects, and to do everything possible so the State of Israel will fit into this world whose face is changing. No longer are we necessarily "a people that dwells alone, 'and no longer is it true that "the whole world is against us.' We must overcome the sense of isolation that has held us in thrall for almost half a century."
