The struggle for mastery of Central Asia from the 1820s to the present, including the many interesting individuals involved in this history. A Cornelia and Michael Bessie Book. Judith A. Klinghoffer, <Jklinghoff@aol.com> "Vietnam, Jews and the Middle East: Unintended Consequences" (Macmillan/St. Martin's: 1999). The American 1965 decision to focus decisively on the Vietnamese front forced it to rely on regional allies for the protection of her interests. Hence, "moderate" countries like Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Israel replaced "extremist" countries like Egypt and Algeria as strategic assets. The shift increased Soviet influence in the region. At the same time, American difficulties in thwarting a war of national liberation in Vietnam increased Arab/Palestinian' strategic support for such a war against Israel. When Moscow decided to encourage an Arab opening of a second Cold War front in the Middle East in response to the April 1967 American escalation of the bombing in Vietnam, Washington found itself unwilling and unable to fulfill her commitment to Israel. Israel won the war, became an American strategic asset but, as De Gaulle had so presciently predicted, the Vietnam War had to be settled before any progress could be made in the Middle East.
Abraham David, To Come to the Land: Immigration and Settlement in 16th Century Eretz-Israel <ADAVID@vms.huji.ac.il>. Translated by Dena Ordan. (Tuscaloosa and London, 1999). ISBN 0-8173-0935-7. This volume sets before the English reader a vast body of research, Previously available only in Hebrew, on the late medieval history of Eretz-Israel, focusing on the communal institutions in Safed and Jerusalem Jewish communities in the sixteenth century, its yeshivot and outstanding rabbinic figures. Attention is devoted to immigration, patterns of settlement, demographic, social and economic issues related to the brief but seminal flowering of Jewish life in Eretz-Israel under the early Ottoman regime. The book concludes with 79 brief biographies of rabbinic figures active in sixteenth-century Eretz-Israel.<http://www.uapress.ua.edu>
