IMPORTANT NEWS: PLEASE SUPPORT MERIA

The Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA) project now reaches almost 4,000 readers directly and thousands more through our homepage.

While MERIA has been and will always remain free of charge to readers, it is not, of course, free for us to produce. We urge readers to assist by a) sending tax-deductible donations [we recommend $20 a year] to help the project and b) providing suggestions or contacts for foundation or other support: besa@ashur.cc.biu.ac.il or: MERIA, BESA Center for Strategic Studies, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel.

With your backing, we intend to continue and further expand these publications and services to Middle East studies. Send tax- deductible checks to MERIA c/o Yehuda Halevy, Bar-Ilan University, 91 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY 10003-3039.

1. NEW PUBLICATIONS OF INTEREST

BOOKS:

The International Institute for Strategic Studies has just published Strategic Survey 1997/98, a basic reference books for international affairs. On the Middle East, the book identifies the U.S.-Iraq confrontation as one of two main crises in 1997 (the other was Asia's economic problems. It analyzes Caspian oil as "much less important than many political analyses have implied," more comparable to the North Sea than to Saudi fields. On the UN inspection of Iraqi arms, it says "UNSCOM has achieved more than any of its creators ever imagined" and details these discoveries, though noting, "Iraq has never cooperated with UNSCOM. At best, it has allowed the inspectors to roam around the country freely until they arrive at the gates of an establishment where illegal items are hidden." It surveys the Arab-Israeli peace process and changes in Iraq, along with much useful information. Cost $39. See: [http://www.isn.ethz.ch/iiss/stratsur.htm].
