2. RESEARCH QUERIES--PLEASE HELP

Answers to previous queries:
To query 9 on Soviet/PLO relations, see "The Soviet Union and the PLO (St. Antony's Series)," by Roland Dannreuther (St. Martins Press-ISBN=0312172230/e). Galia Golan, "Moscow and the PLO: The Ups and Downs of a Complex Relationship," in Avraham Sela and Moshe Ma'oz, The PLO and Israel: From Armed Conflict to Political Solution, 1964-1994, (St. Martins, 1997).

To query 10, regarding why Iraq invaded Kuwait, Bruce Jentleson, With Friends like These: Reagan, Bush and Saddam, 1982-1990 (New York: W.W. Norton and Company, 1994). "From Jedda to Cairo: The failure of Arab Mediation in the Gulf Crisis" --Bruce Maddy-Weitzman and Joseph Kostiner, Diplomacy & Statecraft, Vol. 7, No. 2 (July 1996), pp. 466-490.

To query 12, on police forces in the Middle East. Thanks to Prof. Sanford R. Silverburg of Catawba College. On the [mandatory] Palestine Police Force see: Edward Horne. A Job Well Done: A History of the Palestine Police Force 1920-1948. Leigh-on-Sea, Essex: Palestine Police Old Comrades Benevolent Assn., 1982; Marcel Roubicek. Echo of the Bulge: Extinct Military and Constabulary Forces in Palestine & Transjordan 1915-1967. Jerusalem: Franciscan Printing Press, 1975. Issues of the Palestine Police Magazine is available, I think from Harvard. I have a complete set on microfilm.

New queries:

Query 14: Laura Wharton is doing a Master's thesis on the Israeli Communist Party's project (1966-1989) of sending Israelis, mostly Arab, to study in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Why the Soviets supported this project, what the students brought back with them, and what the long-term results were on the Israeli Communist Party, as well as on Israeli Arab society as a whole. So far I've interviewed a number of students and a good number of Israeli Communists involved in the project, in addition to a good bit of reading on the subject. 1) I'm interested in interviewing more students sent by the CP; 2) I'm interested in meeting and talking with anyone else who is interested in or has any wider knowledge of the subject.

Response to Query 14: Elie Rekhess wrote a book that includes this topic, The Arab Minority in Israel: Between Communism and Nationalism (Hebrew, Kibbutz Hameuchad, 1993). He also wrote an article, "Jews and Arabs in the Israeli Communist Party," Itamar Rabinovich and Milton Esman, Ethnicity, Pluralism, and The State in the Middle East, pp. 121-139.

Query 15: Professor Paul Sullivan (Cairo, Egypt) Where could I find an very detailed breakdown of the trade between Egypt and Israel since Camp David?; I keep hearing about trade between Israel and other Arab states even as early as the 1980s. Any data on this other than rumor?; Where would be the most comprehensive and detailed list of joint Israeli-Jordanian projects?

Response to Query 15. Israel Statistics Bureau, Section on Foreign Trade has some useful materials: "Jordan Imports, 1997" and "Jordan Exports, 1997"; "Israel-Egypt Trade Developments, 1982-1996." We are sending Professor Sullivan copies of these studies. The best list of Israeli-Jordanian projects is in Lori Plotkin, "Jordan-Israel Peace: Taking Stock, 1994-1997," Washington Institute for Near East Policy, 1997, $11.00+shipping, 34 pp. There are about 15 joint Israel-Jordan projects relating to textile production alone. One partial way to examine the secret Israel-Arab trade is to look at Israel-Cyprus commerce during these years.
